Corporate Partnership (read more a new page opens) Businesses have always partnered with NGOs when looking to tackle social and environmental issues that matter to them. Well-known examples include GSK’s partnership with Save the Children to help reduce child mortality, the Aviva-British Red Cross collaboration to help communities with disaster preparedness and response, and Lifebuoy’s partnership with NGOs to promote hand hygiene.

A further example is Danone’s partnership with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and the International Union for Conservation of Nature to restore natural ecosystems that support disadvantaged rural communities.Corporate and not-for-profit partnerships are also on the rise.

The 2018 Corporate-NGO Partnerships Barometer from C&E Advisory, a UK-based consultancy, has found that 86% of corporate respondents and 88% of NGO respondents see the role of corporate-NGO partnerships growing in importance over the next three years.

Most corporates focus their social responsibility efforts on a specific set of causes. This shortlist typically emerges from one or more of the following: the needs and ground realities where the business operates; reference to larger frameworks such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals; alignment with the business’s core competencies, brand, and corporate values; and long-term benefits for the company.

The 2018 Deloitte Millennial Survey, for instance, found that young people’s loyalty towards their employers decreases when they feel that business models continue to give greater priority to the bottom line than to the greater good.

Fifty-seven percent of Millennials hoping to leave their current employer within two years said their companies fixate on profit, compared with a significantly lesser 42% of those who intend to remain with their current employer for five years or more, according to the survey.

Businesses are also finding that earning trust is vital to operating in communities. Partnerships with NGOs that have strong local knowledge and experience in tackling on-the-ground concerns are therefore viewed as a positive step.

What Can A Business Gain From Forging A Relationship With Us?

Credibility

Research shows that social and environmental reports by companies continue to suffer from a credibility gap in the eyes of stakeholders. NGOs bring corporates a different type of credibility and objectivity when they form partnerships with them. They bring access to networks that are often not available to the private sector: networks in civil society, existing relations with government, relations with the scientific community, links to grassroots, community-based organizations and all the way down to direct access to the beneficiaries of programs. Forging relationship with Block Youth Foundation will be a form of contributing to the bright future of the youth who in turn can get to serve the society well.

Networks

Companies can tap into our networks in order to address sustainable development issues ‘on the ground’ in countries where their suppliers are operating as well as get to extend their business to countries and consumers that are currently out of their reach. Block Youth Foundation being an International NGO also offer opportunities for foreign businesses to gain access to socially and environmentally progressive markets in other regions and countries.

Opposites can attract. It is the differences that exist between NGOs and businesses – both in resources and in organisational forms – that make NGOs attractive partners for companies seeking to make the transition to sustainability. It is important that those differences – in particular the capacity of NGOs for independent advice and action – should not be compromised as a result of any partnership – building.

Partnerships should not be seen in isolation from other forms of NGO campaigning. They form one (increasingly important) element in an NGOs’ toolkit for bringing about change. Partnering with Us can be an attractive proposition, because we bring a unique perspective to support and make the youth the future ahead by getting them to live for it today.
